Meet your instructor
Hannah Ringstaff is the heart of Ivy Hill Music Studio. A 2014 graduate of Southern Adventist University with a degree in Music, she blends world-class classical training with a warm, welcoming approach built for Appalachian families.
Rather than enforcing rigid, identical modules, she shapes every program around the student’s own learning pace, stage of development, and natural coordination.
The studio sits on a quiet, scenic hillside in Harlan, Kentucky — a haven of rural calm where nature and acoustic learning meet.

The Ivy Hill Method
Like ivy on a trellis, real musicianship grows in stages — each one supported by the last. Every student follows the same four movements, at their own tempo.
Listen
Before a single key is pressed, we train the ear — pitch, rhythm, and tone. Hearing music clearly is the foundation everything else is built on.
Foundations
Posture, hand position, breath, and notation. We set the technical groundwork patiently and correctly so habits serve the student for life.
Fluency
Sight-reading, scales, and steadily growing repertoire. The point where reading and playing begin to feel natural rather than effortful.
Expression
Interpretation, dynamics, and performance poise — for recitals, worship, community band, or simply the joy of playing a piece beautifully.
Lessons structured for progress.
No complicated registration retainers — just standard, focused 30-minute private lessons centered entirely on you.
Foundational Piano Study
Students work directly on Jean Jackson’s beloved, meticulously cared-for piano. Lessons cover chord structure, posture, standard notation, memory, and steady performance poise.
Classical Woodwind Flute
Focuses on breath support, embouchure, hand coordination, and score exploration. Ideal for solo players or community band preparation.

At-Home Keyboard Rental
Ideal for beginning pianists who need consistent home practice but aren’t ready for a full acoustic piano. Includes a keyboard stand, sustain pedal, and local maintenance.

Keeping a music legacy alive for the community.
Jean Jackson gave more than 60 years to music as a devoted church organist and pianist — playing faithfully for worship, week after week, across a lifetime of service.
Today her beloved piano lives in our studio, a historical anchor for every lesson. To honor her spirit of accessible instruction, we award two six-month scholarships each year to young Harlan residents.
“Music is a community gift, meant to be shared — not gatekept behind financial walls.”
The scholarship
Awarded on the strength of each student’s essay or art piece. Details kept confidential.

Roughly age six and up, once a child can sit, focus, and follow simple directions for a short stretch. There’s no upper limit — adult beginners are warmly welcomed, including those returning to music after many years away.
Not at all. Lessons happen on the studio’s instruments, and home practice keyboards ($15/mo) or student flutes ($12/mo) are available to rent — with full ownership after one continuous year of lessons, so nothing is wasted.
Consistency matters far more than length. Beginners do beautifully with just 10–15 focused minutes most days. Every student leaves each lesson with a clear, small practice goal — never a vague “go practice.”
Lessons are $25 each for a weekly 30-minute session — about four a month. If you prefer one predictable number, pay the month in advance for a flat $90, a small saving over paying lesson by lesson. Scheduled studio breaks are planned into the calendar. Use the estimator in the Lessons section to see your month at a glance.
Life happens. With at least 24 hours’ notice, lessons can be rescheduled to another open slot that week whenever possible. Hannah will always work with families to find a fair, flexible solution.
Yes — every student takes part in the studio recital. Performing is a core part of growing as a musician: it builds confidence, gives each student a goal to work toward, and is a joy for families to share. Hannah prepares students thoroughly so they walk on stage ready and proud, whatever their level.
